Main view of Erie County Courthouse

The Erie County Courthouse, situated in Erie, Pennsylvania, stands as a historic government edifice that serves as the focal point for judicial proceedings within the county. Erie County, Pennsylvania, derives its name from Lake Erie, which honors the Erie tribe of Native Americans that originally inhabited the region. Established in 1795, the city of Erie emerged as a significant port and industrial center due to its advantageous location along the Great Lakes. During the War of 1812, Erie County played a vital role as a supply depot for American forces. Over the years, it has evolved into a hub for manufacturing and shipping, reflecting the wider economic developments of the area.

The building was initially constructed with only the west wing in 1855, designed by Thomas U. Walter, who also designed the dome of the United States Capitol. Over the years, the courthouse has undergone renovations and expansions, including the addition of the east wing in 1927, designed by Walter L. Monahan. It accommodates various courtrooms and administrative offices for Erie County.

Although the construction of both wings was completed 72 years apart, they exhibit a remarkable level of architectural uniformity, making them appear identical. Each wing features a symmetrical façade that contributes to a balanced and harmonious aesthetic. This symmetry is accentuated by a grand pedimented portico, supported by six Corinthian columns.

A glass-fronted lobby between the two wings was added in 2005, to connect the two wings, creating a striking central entrance.
