Main view of Government House (Prince Edward Island)

Government House of Prince Edward Island is the official residence of the lieutenant governor of Prince Edward Island. It's also known as Fanningbank.

The building serves not only as the residence but also as an office of the lieutenant governor where he/she performs constitutional duties including issuing of writs of election. The building is also used to swear in the members of the Legislative Assembly to the provincial cabinet.

The building was built in 1834 as a viceregal residence for the lieutenant governor of the then British colony of Prince Edward Island as its base of the colonial administration. It was designed by Isaac Smith, an architect from North Yorkshire, England, who also designed the Province House of Prince Edward Island.

Built with the wood framing and cladded with wood shingles, the building is a two-storey Georgian architecture with the Palladian elements. At the central portico, the colonnade with four double-height ionic columns supports the pediment containing the Lieutenant Governor’s Emblem.

The portico is a well known porch where the photo was taken when the Charlottetown Conference took place in 1864 to discuss the Canadian Federation.

The central portico is extended to the single-storey wrap-around verandah supported by the Doric columns. This makes the building a symmetric style of its Georgian architecture.
